Unless you have been living off the grid for the past 10 years, everyone knows LED lighting is better than CFL and incandescent for many reasons: their lifetime is about 5x longer, there is a wider selection and they reduce power consumption. It is for these reasons that the United States Government is implementing some harsh restrictions against CFL and incandescent in upcoming years.
According to the Department of Energy, the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) passed in 2007 is the first in a series of laws that will slowly phase out all non-Led lighting by 2020. Not that EISA bans all non-LED lights, moreover it will implement new standards that only LEDs can meet.
This lighting proposal also pertains to the CFL and incandescent lighting industry, who are going to have new and strict congressionally mandated standards that they must meet come 2020. Even now, states like California are in the process of mandating solar power for all new buildings. Greener initiatives like this are starting to draw attention from residents of other states, who urgently seek to lower utility costs in their increasingly urban living spaces.
These are all part of the government’s “big picture” plan to further mainstream LED lighting and reduce both lighting/ material pollution from having to replace incandescent lights. A summary of the Energy Independene and Security Act can be found here.
